October, also known as 'Pinktober'
Various shades of pink, the colour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
“The designation of October as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in South Africa reflects a nationwide drive by public and private healthcare structures to raise awareness of this debilitating disease across all races and class structures.” as recently stated by South African Government.
Every October, people all over the world show their support for people affected by breast cancer.
The long-standing awareness campaign definitely means different things to different people. For some, it’s about celebrating strength and survival. For others, advocacy and a push to educate people about the realities of breast cancer.
It’s important for women to be empowered with knowledge regarding lowering their cancer and health risk and recognising warning signs.
According to the World Health Organisation, between 30 and 50% of all cases are preventable – and campaigns such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month contribute to mindfulness of the disease, early detection and prevention strategies. Let’s all do our part in looking after our bodies.
But let’s not forget our friends, colleagues and family members that might be going through it right now. Let’s take their hands, be their support and help them find their strength.
For your support, might just be what helps someone else get through the most difficult part of their life’s journey!
